What is self-perceived competence? Self-perceived competence is more than just a child’s self-confidence or esteem, though that is part of it.  Self-perceived competence is a child’s belief in their own abilities. Psychologists talk about the key role parents play in nurturing their children’s self-competence, including both crafting experiences for children to learn new skills and getting out of the way for children to do things on their own.
